Weekly Reflection #7

This week Michael took a different approach in how we ran our zoom class. Instead of informing and educating us on resources and technological aspects of learning he placed into Ed Camp sessions. We had the freedom to create and choose our own topics of interest that were related to education which was really great. I chose to join a group that talked about the effectiveness of inquiry based learning. I thought this was a very interesting and relevant topic because of all the inquiry assignments were are completing in our classes currently. I noticed that when I was talking to the other students before this class about the inquiry projects they said that they have never done a project on inquiry before. Many of them has said “in my 12 years of schooling I have never heard of the term inquiry used in the classroom”.

Personally I did two inquiry project in grades 6 for science and 7 for a social studies lesson but have had no experience with it other than that. So then the question arose, why are we suddenly doing so many inquiry projects now when we had never done them in grade school? We talked about how the freedom of this type of learning is almost to the point where there are not enough structural guidelines to keep moving forward. Traditionally school is where the teachers gives the students clear instructions and expectations and the students work within these boundaries, but with inquiry this all goes out the window. Many of us said we prefer the more instructional approach to learning so that the kids know exactly what is expected of them and always feel that their learning is being supported  by their teacher. However, inquiry is great in that it allows students to delve into what they think is important, relevant and interesting. Thich is extremely important because it means the students are venturing out on their own and exploring topics that really entice them. We also talked about how inquiry may be learning style that is more effective for older students in grades 6 and up who are able to create questions and make connections on their own.

Overall this lesson was very interactive and allowed me to hear my fellow classmates thoughts and ideas around learning through inquiry. I hope we can do this type of session again one day!

Music Growth Journal #3

Last week I worked on my final song “Here Comes the Sun” on my recorder. I attempted to learn the chorus for this song which used the notes B,A,G. I found this to be much easier than the Titanic song which I worked on two weeks ago. It was also much easier to learn because I knew the tune of this song much better than the intro to “My Heart Will Go On”. I watched a video on someone playing this song and instructing which notes to press down on, she also explained how to blow properly into the recorder. I wish I had learnt to play this song second after “Hot Cross Buns” because it used the same three notes. I chose this song because it is my favourite song by the Beatles and I thought it would use relatively easy notes that I already knew. I enjoyed learning this song as it was less frustrating to teach myself, and it sounded better and more in tune than the last song I learnt. I think watching an instructional video of someone actually playing the song rather than watching a video only showing which notes are held down is more beneficial. The person hummed along to the song, reminding me which note came next and went extra slowly to really explain how she was handling her recorder.

Free Inquiry #5

Hello! In this weeks blog on the topic of CrossFit I will be delving into the world of nutrients and diet. Here we will examine the CrossFit diet pyramid and what each step of this pyramid entails.

First you must lay out your goal. You need to find whether you should be bulking or cutting, where you body fat percentage is and whether you are trying to increase performance or focus more on body aesthetic. Most people find themselves struggling to decide whether they need to work primarily on muscle gain or fat loss and how to do these things. It is difficult for people who are looking to bulk up to understand that gaining a bit of fat is a necessary step in achieving muscle gain, this fat can later be cut out leaving behind only muscle. So once you work on the adherence of you diet plan, which is the first and most important step in the pyramid, we can move on to looking at macro nutrients.

Macro nutrients are composed of protein, carbohydrates and fat. Protein is needed to build  and maintain muscle. It is also necessary to help your muscles recover and be built back stronger and better. We look at carbs and fat as body fuel. Many fad diets such as keto which very popular currently, leans towards one or the other, instead it is more beneficial to have a balanced intake of both fats and carbs.

The next step in this pyramid is micro nutrients, so looking at water, vegetable and fruit intake. Of course all of this is varied depending on the persons age, weight, physically activity etc. Some may sweat more than others, therefore, need to re-gain that water through increased micro intake allowing for minerals and nutrients to be replaced in the body. Personally, when I complete an intensive workout where I sweat immensely I sprinkle some Himalayan salts into my water to replace those minerals that I lost.

Next will be timing, most athletes feel the need to take a protein drink within the 30 minute window after they’ve worked out for the protein to be most effective. However, this is not necessarily the case, it is important that amino acids which are the building blocks of protein must be present in your bloodstream at the time you’re working out so that muscle mass is not broken down and your body has what it needs to begin the recovery process. But this can simply be accomplished through eating 2-3 proper meals a day where a sufficient amount of protein is present.

Last we have supplements, overall supps make a very small difference in performance and muscle maintenance. They are more so that you are getting the vitamins you need that that you’re not getting from eating fruits and vegetables. Since supps are at the top of the pyramid, they are the least important, and if you do not have a strong base which means meeting all the other steps supps are even less important.

Overall CrossFit diet plans can be quite grueling but understanding the basic concept of having a healthy diet is the first step. I learned a lot about the importance of macros and micros from research for this blog post and am intent on cleaning up my diet to make sure my body is getting what it needs to build the most muscles mass it can.

Here is a link to a CrossFit diet plan video that explains the pyramid in further detail!

Music Growth Journal #2

This week I have been focusing on learning how to play the very first part of Titanic on the recorder. For this song I used the notes F,C,A,E, and G. I found the C note to be the most difficult because it requited me to hold down all the holes at the same time. It often made a squeakier and higher pitched noise than it was supposed to make. This piece was more heavily involved than my last one and took about an hour and a half for me to learn. Initially I was going to learn the third line of the song but It was too difficult for my skill level and no matter how hard I tried I was unable to get it right. I have realized that learning music is certainly frustrating, I found myself wanting to give up many times but somehow persevered.  Constantly checking to make sure my posture is good and that I am covering all the notes with the pads of fingers can be very tiring. I also noticed that my fingers were quite sore after each session. I watched many YouTube video tutorials for this song and practiced each note many times. I found it difficult to switch between notes such as from F to E because my fingers and brain are not experienced in doing such a thing. However, once I was getting the hang of playing the song over and over again I was quite excited, it only motivated me more to continue practicing. I have attached a video link to me playing the song below, it is definitely not perfect but I worked hard and am happy with the result!

Weekly Reflections #5

This week after lecture I watched Jeff Hopkins YouTube video on the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry. This school reminded me of the movie Michael had told us to watch during the beginning of this course based on High Tech High. Both of these schools work differently from traditional schools and focus more on the students individual learning in areas that they are most interested in. At PSII there is no set timetable as their whole curriculum and learning is based on their own inquiry. The students here dive very deeply in their topics, I learned that there are groups of about 13 students that are led by one teacher. This ties into my inquiry question in EDCI 250 about instructional methods that can be used to incorporate one to one learning in the classroom. The students at PSII are all delving into their own topics therefore they gain a lot of one on one attention from teachers, therefore receiving a lot of support. I am curious whether these students feel more supported and engaged with school since they are receiving that individual learning as well as maybe building a stronger relationship with their teachers. Overall I think this type of learning is very innovative and interesting. It really lets students be individuals and focus their studies on things they find important which is amazing. One of the reasons students often lose focus in class is because they are simply not interested in the lessons being taught, therefore at PSII, the fact that students learn what they want is a great way of keeping students on track and ensuring they are constantly progressing in their studies.

Music Growth Journal #1

Today I took the time to begin learning my first song which was Hot Cross Buns. I chose this song because I already knew the tune of the song and am familiar with it. I learnt the notes B, A,G for this song and found it to be quite straightforward.  I tried to use tonguing to get a better and more clear sounds from the recorder but I am still not sure if I am doing this correctly. Overall this song was easy to play and I feel confident about it. This was my first time using the recorder since I was in 4th grade. It brought back many memories from elementary school and how I always found playing instruments to be slightly frustrating as they make screechy sounds if not played right. I remembered to blow very softly into my recorder to avoid squeaking. Some tips I read online that I made sure to follow was to use the pads of fingers to fully cover the note to get the best sounds, using the tongue to blow rather then just pushing air into the instrument and maintaining good posture. I found that it was difficult at time to cover the entire hole with my fingers because I was concentrated on moving from one note to the next. The next song I will learn to play is the very beginning of the song Titanic, I think this piece is much more involved and will definitely take more time to learn. I have already started practicing the F note for this song because it is heavily used. I find it difficult to hold both the notes at the top and bottom of my recorder at the same time using both hands.  I am hopeful that the more I practice the more I will be able to control all my fingers on both hands.

Free Inquiry #4

The finals of the 2020 Reebok Crossfit games are looming closer. The events are to take place on October 23rd through the 25th in Northern California. This competition is made up of the top 5 men and women; these games will determine the fittest man and women on earth. The events of this years finals have not yet been made public. In this blog post I would like to discuss the history of the sport and whether or not it will continue to grow in popularity.

Crossfit was officially established in 2000 by Glassman and Lauren Genai. It all started in the mid nineties when Glassman, a gymnast, found that he was able to grow stronger and better than his teammate by incorporating dumbbell and barbell movements into his usual calisthenics workouts. The main aspect of Crossfit were to enhance 10 key physical qualities: “cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy” (The Box, 2017). This was to better overall performance and strength within athletes for a variety of workout such as cycling, running, climbing, gymnastics, etc. What makes Crossfit different from just working out is that Crossfit is done within a community. This community supports and encourages other athletes no matter what. It is not individualistic but done more in a group setting, this community all share the same goal which is to build the best versions of themselves through doing these intensive workouts. The future of Crossfit is extremely bright, the winnings of the Crossfit games have increased from only $1000 to both the fittest women and man in 2007 to a million dollars by 2020 after being sponsored by Rebook. The popularity of this newish type of athletics is hugely increasing with Crossfit gyms opening up worldwide. Athletes give their all into their high intensity training to be rewarded with strength and a more positive outlook on the world of fitness and overall health.

Weekly Reflection #4

Last week we learned about the numerous things you can do with an image to spice it up. We learned how to edit photos using common programs such as PowerPoint to other more specific programs such as Mirror lab, Prisma and Comica. It is often said that images can convey more thoughts and and feeling than words can, therefore, knowing how to creatively edit an image can be extremely valuable. It gives you the freedom to tailor the photo in a way that is meaningful to you. I did not know that you could use PowerPoint to edit photos, however now that I have watched a few tutorials on how to do so I am looking forward to using this newfound skill at one point in my own classroom one day. Digitally enhancing/ editing photos is most definitely an art that is similar to drawing with pen and paper. It requires you to be creative and work from and build an image that is totally your own. I do not have experience with this form of art but I think it is very cool! However, I do have experience screenshotting images on my laptop and having them saved onto my files. This is a very convenient tool to use if you need to quickly send someone an email with an attachment or if you are unsure of how to save the image (still making sure to site it of course). I like how you can crop screenshots and make them any size you want for it to fit onto you work. Overall this was a very helpful lesson, I am still very unaware of the creative things you can do with simple programs and this lesson definitely opened up a whole new stream of learning.

I used these four images to create one large graphic using PowerPoint. It was difficult to find exactly where the took functions I needed were in order to edit the images it in a way that I wanted. I tried uploading it s a pdf and then a presentation but I kept an error message and finally just screenshotting the image, cropped and copied it onto here.

This is my final image created by using all the images above fit together in a creative and aesthetic presentation.

Free inquiry #3

This week I had the chance to see everyone else’s topic for their free inquiry project, it was very interesting to see what sort of things are of interest to other people that I have never even thought of. In this blog post I would like to look at what it takes to become a CrossFit athlete. I was able to learn and find out about the following using resources such as YouTube and Instagram TV. The motivation that goes into the training of athletes is almost incomparable to most things. There is one coach in the CrossFit world that said training as a CrossFit athlete is basically like having a mental illness. It is constantly pushing yourself to the absolute maximum as well as pushing the extremes of your body’s physical and mental capabilities while also enjoying it. It is to have one clear and focused goal; to become stronger. You must be absolutely obsessed with goal or you will never be motivated enough to workout everyday in such a way that world class CrossFit athletes do. Most athletes make extreme sacrifices in areas of having a stable job, diet and social life. The dedication that it takes to pursue this goal makes it as though training is their full time job which is crazy as they don’t necessary get paid to train. I think that what separates CrossFit athletes from the general population is the obsession with being stronger. This then allows them to make these sacrifices in order to gain strength. To these athletes, the benefits from gaining that extra sliver of strength to potentially winning over a competitor is worth every cost and sacrifice that they must make. The rigorous training schedules, diets and lifestyles that these athletes bind themselves to is almost unimaginable.

Tia Toomey is the currently the fittest women in the world, she is originally from Australia.

Weekly Reflection #3

This week we had a guest speaker attend our class call. His presentation was extremely informative and eye-opening, he made me think of the little things that could make a huge impact on my career as a professional. To be completely honest I was quite tuned out and focused on completing other tasks for my other class at the beginning of his presentation, I was sort of half listening to what Jesse was saying and even then I don’t think I was really understanding what he was talking about. It was not until he started giving examples of teachers on the island, in Vancouver, teachers who were local to my area, did I start listening. I was shocked at the impact that technology, social media had on these peoples lives, using it inappropriately had completely ended their careers. I believe that teachers and students both do no realize that most footprints made on social media can be traced. Anything posted in Facebook or Instagram can be leaked and forwarded. It made me think back to my middle school tech teacher who told my class that anything we do on the internet, anything we look up and say can always be traced back to us.  It also made me think of recent account on Instagram I have seen that was based on exposing the secrets and spreading rumors about specific students and teachers. And now I think that education based on the safety factor of all these platforms is really lacking in the education system. It is great that are furthering the integration of tech and our cellphones into the classroom and making them tools that allow education to be more accessible, however it needs to be heavily emphasized that the wrong text or post can ruin someone’s educational as well as professional career.
